My name is Janae Hunter and I'm an emerging artist based in Melbourne.

My work is rooted in a process that weaves together materials, diaristic practices, and personal connections to shape my understanding of healing. I use a visual language built on intuitive responses, working with materials held close to the skin like fabrics such as cotton, canvas, linen and flannelette. There, it becomes a surface of communicating what it means to both acknowledge the impact, and how it can go on to heal itself.

Fascinated by this interface, I admire the ways in which vulnerability can also be a symbol for resilience. This important shift in my practice is drawn from both personal experiences and a direction that holds a great weight of honesty. When this shift occurred, I felt the anchor in my work settle and it asserted itself as a gentle authority in not recreating pain, but tending to the lingering of what is left after.
